Make an On-Demand Sub-Reports use a shared variable in select expert

Is there a way to declare a shared variable in a main report and then force an on-demand sub-report to use that shared variable in its select expert?

No, because the select expert takes place before the subreport sees the shared variables. To hit the select expert (or the selection formula) create a parameter in the subreport and then link the subreport's parameter to a formula in the main report.
