Hello.. we just got our Luts 6.5 up and running and i'm trying to simply send an email to another user in the same database on the same server.

I go into send an email to this person and go into our Domains address book. I find the person and select him and send the message. It never gets there. i go into that server via Domino Admin and use the tracking center to find the message.

The message says "Delivery Failure" and the Delivery Reason is: User not listed in public Name & Address Book - what the hell is that? I selected him out of the public address book!?!?

I've spent the past four hours going through help to try and figure this out but i just dont get it.. any advice?

tons of stars coming to anyone who helps me figure this out..

Does the server have a Router task enabled ?
Does the recipient have a valid Person document in the server NAB with a mail file path pointing to a mail database ?

Pascal.

Ya know, if I knew where to check that stuff, I bet I could probably answer that.. but I don't have a clue where to check either of those.

I've actually managed to get a couple of messages to go from user to user.. not quite sure how, but it's workin.

Now, i've moved on to setting up notifications to send to a couple inparticular people. I can set up the notifications just fine, but when I try and delete them it tells me i'm not authorized to delete server documents. So, that means I can create something I can't delete. Frickin brilliant.

Do people actually choose to use Notes? Cause I'd rather work with Windows 3.1 than this crap.. just my opinion.

thanks for the help

Notes is not crap. It is not a browser either, nor some other app that you can pick up as you go along.
Notes requires training and reading the manual. If you're not ready to do that, then don't knock the software.

maybe you missed this "..I've spent the past four hours going through help to try and figure this out.." - that was just trying to send a single email!

But I agree with you.. I was just getting pretty frustrated.. I'm going to read now.

Okay snoots,

I admit that I had a fast reaction there. I've been working as a Notes developer for almost ten years now. I have followed the product through important evolutionary steps with every version. I have grown to respect this tool very much. As far as I am concerned, Lotus has done an incredibly good job adding functionality without breaking backward compatibility, and that with every single version of its software.
There are databases designed for R4 that still work under R6, three versions later (yeah, confusing, but there is R4.6 between R4 and R5). There are not many vendors that can boast that kind of record.
So, when I hear anybody taking Notes lightly, it gets under my skin real fast. Not that I skip the fact that Notes is rather hard to learn - far from that. It is a totally different product, one that does not obey MS-issued interface standards to the letter (and it goes way deeper than that).
Yet, once you have mastered the differences, I truly believe that no other product can bring you so much in just one package. Call me brainwashed, I don't mind :).

Now, I'm just a developer, so I know a bit about installing and managing servers, but I'm far from knowing everything.
You can check the tasks the server is running by going to the console and typing "show tasks". You should see a Router task in there, especially since you said that you've managed to send some emails.
As for my other question, you need to check the Names.nsf file (the NAB) on the server. Go to the People view. You will only be able to send Notes mail to individuals who have a Person document in that view. Typically, that means that you (the administrator) have created an ID file for each Notes user.
Of course, you should be able to send internet mail if the SMTP task is up.

Read carefully, and hang on in there. Trust me, its worth it.

Pascal.

One mail thing to look for is to ensure that the user's domain matches the domain you're trying to send to.

For instance, if you're trying to send mail to John Smith/Roadrunner and it's listed in the person document as John Smith/Coyote, it won't find him.

For us, everything was running swimmingly until we added additional servers, then we started to get deilvery failures until we ensured that the Domain had an actual entry.

Administrator. People & Groups. Select person, on the basics tab check the Domain.

Also going through your names.nsf under the Files tab of the administrator.
