Major Flaw in Quark 7

I recently installed QuarkXpress 7.3.1 (or whatever the very latest version is) and have found what I consider a serious problem.

If I have a saved file and attempt to save another file that I have mistakenly given the same name, Quark no longer warns me that I already have a file by that name and it saves the new file and deletes the old one.

This is such a glaring and critical flaw I can't believe that something hasn't been done about it.

...definitely not a quark issue for everyone...

...highly likely it is symptomatic to your computer if this happens every time or now and then...

...maybe a total re-install of quark, if not delete the quark prefs file and re-launch...

...if this doesn't fix it i would advise you jump into the quark forum on their website to discuss...

Actually, it turns out that it is an issue for everyone. I emailed Quark about it last night and got a response from them that they are aware of the problem and are working on a fix.

So all you 7.13 Quark users out there, you need to be extremely careful naming your files and making sure that you aren't saving it to a folder where another file exists with that same name. Because if you do, you will lose the original file.

I am on a G5 Mac (non-Intel) with 10.5.2 O/S.

And 7.31 QuarkXpress. I keep getting the version number wrong. But it is the latest version.

Just to double check that you aren't having the problem. Create a Quark doc and save it to the desktop. Then create another one with the same name but different content and save it to the desktop.

See if Quark warns you that you already have a file there by that name. If it doesn't warn you, and saves it, the file you end up with will be the second one you did and the first one will be gone.

...must be a leopard/quark problem, as I'm on PPC 10.4, this bug is not apparent on tiger...

...in reality, my quark files are all uniquely named anyway, so if i did have leopard then i would probably work the same way in naming conventions...

...none the less, a potentially annoying bug to have for an application...

...in saying that, indesign on leopard has or still has it's fair share of niggles, not much heard on that for while with regards to updates...

...i've heard all sorts about how apple is meant to be providing updates to those fixes for indesign, the last one 10.5.2 has done something but not all...

...might be the same for quark too, telling apple to fix it...

I guess it could have something to do with the mix between Leopard and Quark 7. I updated my computer to both Leopard and Quark 7 at the same time. And also MS Office 2008 on the same day as well.

But I did get an email from Quark saying they were aware of the problem and were working on it. So hopefully a fix will be coming along soon.

I have InDesign but I don't use it. Mainly because I grew up on Quark and there are just too many things about InDesign that I find very difficult to master. I am sure I could get the hang of it if I spent more time with it but I am comfortable with Quark and don't need the pressure of learning another complex program.

...running leopard on my other hard disk, so plugged in and it does reveal the bug, so definite system to application issue here...

...yes, jumping from one app to another can be daunting, never mind time consuming when business needs to be done, best to stick to what you know...

...i do have a dabble in indesign, more so than quark these days, mainly because of the streamline between illustrator native file import, nested style sheets (bit of a mind bender that one can be) and also object styles...

I know that InDesign is very compatible with Illustrator (and Photoshop) which is a major benefit for anyone who uses those programs consistently. I don't use Illustrator at all, even though I have it. If I need something done in that program I use my outside graphic house to do it.

Anyway, thanks for the dialogue and now I will just have to be careful naming my files until Quark completes their fix....which if they are true to form....could take forever.

Quark sure screwed up taking so long to update to System 10. InDesign would never have made the inroads that they have if Quark had been quicker to upgrade. I struggled along in Classic for several years using the old Quark and was totally thankful when they finally came out with Quark 6.

Speaking of Classic, I had only one program left that ran in Classic. Bar Code Pro. And I didn't mind having to switch to classic because it wasn't a program that I used that often. But when I installed Leopard a few weeks ago, I was surprised to find out it no longer supports classic so I had to buy a new version of Bar Code Pro.
