Need some major help with this. I have a compaq presario 5834 with a 500 celeron. my problem is this: Playing games, browsing the net with IE5, downloading.I am recieving many illegal operation messages.
Some examples are:
Rnapp-wsock32.dll at 0167:75fac4e
Rundll32-Kernel32.dll at 0167:bff8ac13
Explorer-wsock32.dll at 167:bff75fc4e
Exploer-kernel32.dll at 167:bff7b9a6
Motmon-kernel32.dll at 0167:bff7b9f5

Tons more.

I contacted compaq and they said it was a microsoft problem, not theirs.
So, I looked at microsoft, but to no avail.
Need some help with this please!
Thanks for the time

Go out and purchase the following software: Norton SystemWorks 2001 and System Mechanic. You can find System Mechanic <A HREF=" These two utilities can take care of just about any issue.

Also, how many processes do you have running at bootup?

DON'T go out any buy anything. Total waste of money, when windows has the tools to fix it built right in.
First, go to Start > Run > and type in: SFC
Choose to extract one file, and extract kernel32.dll from your windows CD, and have it replace the one in c:\windows\system.
Don't worry, it makes a backup for you.
Try your stuff again.
If you still have troubles, run SFC again, and extract wsock32.dll from the CD.
Try it again.
Go and get new drivers for your modem. Cheers,
Jim

Comtech... very handy little utility... i have not seen that one before... learn something new everyday...

Logan1... the files you are having problems appear to be a result of a virus...

i have seen systems with these same issues... i had to boot from a floppy, and run Norton scan from DOS to clean these files... although, i think Comtechs idea may just do the trick, providing the worm/virus is not still present...

try the SFC, then if it works a couple of days, and does it again, then i would imagine you are infected... get your hands on McAfee or Norton AV...

First, thanks for the input. I don't know how it can be a virus, because I just did a full restore on the computer, and it has been happening before and after this was done. The same could be said about the SFC. Sorry if I forgot to memtion this. Also, when the restore was installing (unzipping) a similar message popped up on the screen (can't remember exacly what it pertained too).

I think that the system restore from Compaq doesn't do a good job. You need to format your hard drive and start again, if you still get the same errors then it is Compaq's problem.....good luck

CAUTION! When using SFC, be careful what you extract!
Some files (wsock32, kernel32 for example) are fine to replace, others (user.exe) will cause irreparable damage to windows, and a format/install may be necessary.
ALWAYS make the backup, and take note of where it's placed so you can recover it in DOS if necessary.

logan1, if your current confiuration is full of errors, and your backup is full of errors, and the same thing keeps reoccuring, it's time to check some hardware. Swap out the RAM for known good working RAM first. If you've got more than one stick, try swapping slots. Flaky RAM can cause windows to have seizures.
Is it not possible that you have had a virus for awhile, and it's infected both the current system and the backup? Cheers,
Jim
