Maintenance plan problem 1

I have a Maintenance plan on a database that

1)Backs up the database
2)backs up the transaction log
3)Optimizes the database

Options 1 & 3 run OK

BUT

Option 3 returns

Backup can not be performed on this database. This sub task is ignored

I have checked permissions etc but no joy

Any Ideas?

What recovery model does this DB use? You can't do log backups in the simple recovery model.
