I have a SUN Ultra 60 creator3D running OS 5.8.

This machine has been sitting in a corner for a year and this is the first time it has been started up.
When I start the machine I get :
"Type Control -d to proceed with normal startup, (or give root password for system maintenace):"
typing Control Shift D asks for init run level... no matter what I select I get the following message.

"init: Cannot create /var/adm/utmpx"
if I go into system maintenace typing things like ls does nothing...
All help needed.
Thanks
Hyper

The system is experiencing a hard disk failure. You will either have to give it the root password if you know it, and then run fsck (File System Check) on all partitions, or boot it with a CD and rebuild it.

If you indeed have an account on the box, then you may be able to salvage the box by booting to CD and running fsck on the file system. If you do not have root, you will not be able to perform ANY adminsitrative functions ever on that box.

If it were me, I would rebuild the box from scratch with the solaris CDs. You can download the isos for Solaris, Version 9 directly from sun for free and then burn them to CD.

The site is listed below:

I hope this helps!

Thanks I am able to get into the machine now about 10 minutes ago...
