Maintaining Network Connection While on a VPN 1

Hi all, I'm pretty clueless when it comes to the VPN I need to use. I have Vista on my main computer where I do my work, and XP on my laptop where the VPN client is installed (the client doesn't work on Vista so I'm stuck with this scenario). I would like to retain the network connection between the two computers while the laptop is on the VPN, but that doesn't seem to be possible with my current settings. Is this possible or is this just the nature of VPN? I will need to retrieve files using the VPN and then work on them on my main Vista computer, moving them back via the VPN on the XP computer.

I have a router where the two computers are attached. When I'm not on the VPN they can exchange files between them and I can use a Remote Desktop Connection. As soon as I sign on the VPN that connection is broken.

Help? Thanks!

It's the Cisco VPN Client version 5.0.01.0600.

Whoever configures the Cisco device that the vpn terminates on would have to configure "split-tunneling" on their end. That being said most companies don't permit it because it is a security risk.

Ahh, okay then. I'll see what I can get, but it doesn't sound good. Thanks for your help!
