Hi everyone,

My client wants to be able to compile a mailing list via their website, this part is easy. My question is concerning sending emails directly from the site. Are there any spamming issues I need to worry about?

Are there any simple alternative that I can offer?

Thanks for your time, any help is appreciated

there are a few issues. exactly what they are depends on your client's business requirements and site design.

the main (current) hacking attack is to fake headers so that the mail application will use your client's site for spamming relays.

i'd recommend using phpmailer (on sourceforge) to handle the mails. you might also employ a queueing system.

Really, and I won't get any crap from my webserver?
I mean, what if the mailing list is some huge number?

with phpmailer you specify the smtp host you want to use.

you will have to check with your smtp host whether they have any restrictions on mail quantity.

are you not giving away your subscriber data through this service? they also get a lot of valuable data by aggregating all their customer's info.

i have applications that generate a few thousand emails a week (i.e. not a huge amount). they all goe out of my host's servers who have never complained. i use 1and1.co.uk to do the hosting if that is of use. i pay about £100 a year for a few gig of space and a whole bunch of domains and mail addresses etc. never had any trouble with them either.
