Mailer-Daemon is sending itself email?

After having an issue of not sending out email for a weekend I have been checking my Defer, Send and Recieve folders on a regular basis and cleaning up after the Mailer Daemon that so loves to reply to every spam that we get. I would like to turn that off, but I can also see that at least sending out those messages might get less spam in the long run. But why does the Daemon occassionally mail itself to say it couldn't deliver the message and is there anyway to stop that? Thanks
