Mailbox has unusually high amount of emails

SBS 2003 environment and running Trend Micro Officescan and Trend Micro Scanmail for Exchange.

One users mailbox has grown from an average amount of items in the mailbox to 42,000! I have logged in to her mailbox and there is only just over 1000. Whats going on?

Is there any way of getting rid of these falsly reported emails because its reporting to be 860Mb in size.
