I have a user who purchased a new macbook pro(OS X 10.6)to use in an SBS 2003/Exchange 2003 environment. She will not purchase Office. We've been able to get everything to work with the mail program except when she connects to the network by VPN, the SMTP server shows offline. She can send mail when she is physically in the office and connected to the network but not when connected via VPN.

i would suspect that there is a port that is not being forwarded to the VPN connection. This could be due to local computer settings, but often ISPs will 'mandate' that ports 25 and 587 can only connect to their mail server, thus if you attempt to connect to some other mailserver using those ports it will fail.

Yes, fisheromacse is right but that will usually only apply to your "home" ISP. If she is using a corporate email server, depending on its relay rights you may have to let the VPN's DHCP pool use (relay) from the mail server or she she authenticate first by checking and then in theory should be able to send.

Also make sure the SMTP server on her macbook has a userid and p/w and the server to connect to setup.

As a last resort you could make her Mac be its own SMTP server, then regardless of whos connection she uses she would be able to send mail.
