We are deciding on one of these products. We are currently using Mail Security for Exchange. I would like some opinions on if it is necessary to have both of them, or just one and which one would be better?

Mail Security for Exchange works okay, but does a poor job at blocking spam. It appears that Security for SMTP will do the same thing as Security for Exchange.

We use both. I don't want my exchange box in the DMZ and don't need a front end/back end exchange environment so I use the smtp product in the DMZ and then forward the mail on to the Exchange box from there. I doubt there is a difference in the spam engines (could be wrong) but we haven't had much slip through so I can't complain too much about that. I let the two products mark the spam differently (SPAM 1 or SPAM 2) so I know what is working and where to whitelist when needed.

I like this setup because so far 100% of viruses are caught and dropped away from the exchange box and in the dmz. The mail security product is nice then as a back up or to catch something internal going on. Lots of otions avalable and budgets always make a difference but so far I like having both products.

Good luck!

I personally don't like using AV products right on the exchange server unless its SBS. I prefer to use a seperate product on another server for filtering the mail then forward it on to the exchange server. Depending on how many users you have in your environment you may even want to look into a service offered by postini,
