Mail isn't reaching qmail server

We have a Unix server that routes email to our regular exchange server. However, it will not route qmail addresses to the qmail server.

When sending to qmail from an external address it works and when sending from the regular email exchange it works. However, when sending from this Unix server it acts as if the MX record isn't being looked up. Because of a firewall situation there is a server that sends to this Unix Server which in turn relays to the exchange server. I suspect this has something to do with DNS or the MX lookup.

I am a newbie at this and know the qmail administration part but am not familiar with DNS configuration.

Um, well, starting with no detail, we cannot add much.
In fact, I cannot even follow how many boxes are running what.

1) There is an Exchange server that is functioning as the primary mail server for users. True?
2) There is a Unix box running qmail and its function is to gateway mail from the Internet to the Exchange server. True?
3) "it acts as if the MX record...." why do you say that? Which logs are you reading, what do they say? Is the message returned?
3a) Is this yet another Unix box running a mail service?
4) "there is a server that sends to this Unix Server..." so now there's a fourth box involved?????

You simply must gather your details and share them in an organized fashion. I/We'll be happy to try and help, but you've got to make some effort, I haven't got my psychic's license yet.
