Thanks in advance for your help...

Mail appears to work server side but cannot receive on desktop through outlook express...

I have Sendmail configured and appears to be working on the linux box itself.

- I can get a connection if I run telnet localhost 25
- I can get a connection if I run telnet localhost 110
so I know the 2 ports are working... (On the server that is... I haven't been able to get Telnet to work from the workstation yet either but read SSH may be the thing to use anyway)
- I can send mail from one user to another on the linux box successfully...
- I can actually SEND mail from one user to another from my XP machine to another user and read it on that users box through the linux server...

But the problem lies in the Outlook Express on the workstation where I get a error when trying to send/recieve.

(It takes it's time trying) and then gives this error :

Your server has unexpectedly terminated the connection. Possible causes for this include server problems, network problems, or a long period of inactivity. Account: 'Test Account', Server: '192.168.1.2', Protocol: POP3, Port: 110, Secure(SSL): No, Error Number: 0x800CCC0F

Can you give me a couple of suggestions...

Thanks so much for any help!
Vince

1) View the message in in the User's folder. Is the message large or contain MIME or some other type of formatting that Outlook Express may not handle.

2) Try step 11 on this page.

3) Also adjust the timeout (on step 11 the advanced tab) --> You may have some network issues

4) Lastly is the user's mail spool corrupt? Delete and recreate.

Hope this helps.

I'm at work so I will have to try delete and re-create the user tonight...

My outlook setup is like that in step 11 also yes. I didn't try with SPA but I did try once for the heck of it.

I think my pop3 setup may not be correct... I couldn't get a response from TELNET LOCALHOST 110 and then i finally got it to work when I posted this message but since then it quit again (I made some change somewhere and balled it up again...)

What is the easiest way to verify the pop3 setup and what steps should be done... in my /etc/inetd.d/pop3 file DISABLE = NO and under chkconfig --list it shows it as on but still isnt running again so I have to fix that before my outlook would work correct. It did work at the time of this email though but maybe not 100%.

Thanks,
vince

Before convincing yourself the POP engine is broke, convince yourself that the client is fine.

Can other users send/receive from clients other than outlook express? In your earlier post you stated that you could send/receive from an XP machine.

If true, it is unlikely that the pop server works for sometimes and not others.

Client and spools are other variables need assessment.

I will have to try another client on another workstation after removing and re-creating the user to avoid corruption of that box.

my original post was maybe not all that clear... I "COULD SEND" a mail from my xp machine but i COULD NOT do a send / receive so I wasn't able to recieve pop3 mail.

I will edit to reword that so nobody get's confused.

right now though doing a TELNET LOCALHOST 110 does not work so I think i have to fix that first correct?

You are correct

You may have already tried:
/etc/rc.d/init.d/xinetd stop
/etc/rc.d/init.d/xinetd start

Also
My /etc/xinetd.d/ipop3

service pop3
{
socket_type = stream
wait = no
user = root
server = /usr/sbin/ipop3d
log_on_success += HOST DURATION
log_on_failure += HOST
# disable = yes
}

I tried the Start / stop on the inetd but interesting that you rem'd the Disable out... I know mine has Disable = no so i will try commenting it out completely.

What do you know about not being able to telnet to the linux server from a xp machine? It just goes to a blank screen when I do say telnet localhost 25 (which works fine if i do that same command from the linux box)

A previous linus server that was setup I could telnet to the ip of the machine and use it as I was sitting at it that's kind of the way i want to use it but SSH is the better way I've read but at this point the basic way in my house is fine until I move it to the domain and configure all the way.

i didnt see anyone ask about iptables or ipchains.

You can do things locally but not from outside if not
set right. I also had issues with OExS. The default file should be fine ONLY change the disable = yes to no don't comment it out it gets screwy sometimes if you do. Other than that there is no reason it should not work. Can you send mail off the server?

I think the firewall will fix it.. Turn it off for a sec and see.

I was looking up some IPCHAINS stuff last night but it got late...

Yes I can send mail from the server to the outside also.

I will flush the ipchains and try that also.
