mail from behind firewall

dear all,
I have a problem here...
config: domino 5.01 behind secureway firewall, on nt40
problem: when I send mail for distribution lists and one mail address is wrong, domino retry and send 20-30 times the message for "good" mail addresses (for 24 h);
the problem is identical with ms proxy for big messages;
how can avoid retrans???
