Is it possible to block attachments within notes, or should I be looking at a 3rd party software

With Domino 6.x you can setup rules on the server. One of the options is to set "if number of attachments >0" dont accept.

Thanks for that, but I didn't explain well, I was thinking more along the lines of jpg and wmv files

OK - make the rule "if attachment name contains '.jpg'" or other file name you wish to catch

Take a look at openntf.org's KSpam filters. Works pretty well for me.
