mail.box - dictionary attack

Anyone familiar with making changes to the conf smtp doc? I am getting a lot of ded mail in my mail.box (about 1000 per week) and I read the section in help:

(For more information on configuring Domino to validate recipients before accepting messages, see the topic Restricting users from receiving Internet mail.)

But when I listed our internal users email addresses, per the instructions, everyone stopped getting mail immediately.
