Mail bouncing between servers

Hi, this is related to a groupwise issue I've been having.
Groupwise connector is running on 5.5 (cost 1)
Routing group master is e2k
I have another e2k box to be the new bridgehead on which I've installed another groupwise connector (cost 10)

If the 5.5. box dies (simulated by shutting it down) then mail is NOT routed through the higher cost groupwise connector. I can't find the mails anywhere but after about 2hrs I get NDR's '4.4.6'.

Technet article 275607 has a solution, but this is to get SMTP mail flowing. My SMTP traffic works fine.

Please help, this is driving me nuts!!
