I have a customer with a Magix 2.0 system. They are having system restarts occuring. I have checked the error logs and found Timeout Cold Start errors. When I checked with Avaya they told me to change the processor. I changed the processor AND the power supply (since I was there)as well. I have checked back with the customer to see if they are still having the problem, and sure enough they are still having restarts. I checked the error logs again. There are more Timeout Cold Start errors in the error log. I have called Avaya back and asked them what to try next. They tell me to have a dedicated power circuit installed just for the phone equipment and to call them back when I can get onsite and give them readings from the power test points on the power supply. I'm not sure that a dedicated circuit is going to make a difference. The system is on a 2200VA UPS along with the file server, router and data switch. None of those devices are having any power issues that we can detect.
What makes this more difficult is the fact that this particular customer location is 6 hours away. I am getting the impression that Avaya is just throwing hardware and suggestions at me without really knowing how to fix the problem and that would be ok if the customer location was in the backyard and we had a trunk full of cash. The cost of time and equipment to the customer will add up quick considering windshield time and the cost of modules for the Magix, especially not knowing if it will fix the problem or not.
Does anyone have any suggestions?

Personally I would take a new power supply cord, obtain a separate UPS and plug the new UPS into a different power outlet group (if available).

This seemingly would cover all bases since you've already replaced the processor and power supply on the Magix.

Seeing that the carrier contains the backplane where communication between the processor and the various cards takes place there could be a problem there.

If you are talking about the basic carrier, you could pick on up for around $135 with power supply. If you are talking about an expansion carrier, then they go for around $700 or so. Since the processor and power supply are in the basic carrier, I guess you could try replacing that.

If you replaced the basic carrier, and then moved the power source over to a different set out power outlets and had a separate UPS then all of your bases would be covered I would imagine!

I have seen Legend and Magix reboot because of faulty wiring on the digital sets, if they are shorting or grounding it could corrupt the software. check to see if anyone has problems with their sets going to sleep or doing funny things and trace back to the card. if they are then unplug the phone for the night and see if it reboots still. also check the time that it's rebooting, could be someone using the outlet or heavy equipment hooked up to the ac line like an a.c. or something.

Good tips ken07734! I know our older MLX phones go to sleep at the rate of one every month or so. I thought that this was just oxidized contacts under the keypads. These anomalies can also lead to eletrical instability such as potential shorting and grounding? Interesting.

Thanks for the info guys. Looks like I will be making a trip down there. I will be checking all of these options.
