I have a site with a Magix INA that's been online for over 5 years now. To add some fault tolerance into the environment I would like the INA to forward DHCP client broadcasts in the event the site's local DHCP server is down. I saw a command line setting of 'set dhcp relay <IP address>' that will fit the bill. But I don't want all DHCP broadcasts automatically forwarded over the WAN to the backup DHCP server. Is there any setting on the INA for a maximum number of packets to read before then forwarding the broadcsts over?

You're thinking of something like Cisco's "dhcp enable failover" and "dhcp set failover-backup-server=" commands.

The INA won't do that trick. DHCP relay is how the server knows what subnet a request came from; it's mainly used to support remote BOOTP clients.

A cheap and ugly solution is to setup a second dhcp server that hands out leases in a different IP space than the first. Client get their lease from either server (or at least one server if the other is down).
