Does anyone know whether when your icons dissapear of your desktop, are they really gone or is it just a registry hack that the virus has applied ?

I did find out that when your icons move around then dissapear they do some back in safe mode or when you finally get rid of the virus..... but not without the virus adding some little registry hack that runs a certain program every boot up and when you get rid of that one a new one runs ... it is really anoying ....
