Mag Swipe Keyboard wedge?

I am using a magnetic card swipe using a keyboard wedge interface. Right now I am using an edit box to put the card data into, by setting focus to the edit then proceeding with a scan. For some reason every now and then my program will close on a scan. Does anyone have a clue as to why this may occur? Is there a better way to catch the scan from the wedge?
