Macromedia Flash as a web application platform

After reading some dialog in the browser wars thread and the cost of code duplication to address multiple browsers, I wondered if app developers are looking at the latest version of Flash for possible use in projects.

I have just began working with Flash, but the client-side scripting (ECMAscript-esque) looks to have a fairly complete object model. There are plenty of other goodies like HTTP/XML transfers, programmatic drawing (for graphs, etc.) and multimedia support including video in the latest version.

I know this flies in the face of an open standard, but are people at least looking at this for next gen app front ends?

it has been done, not on a wide scale. one has to get used to a timeline line model rather than procedural or oop models. it can produce some really flashy (no pun inteneded) interfaces. this, i think, is why most developers disregard it - to "frilly" maybe. the new version looks pretty cool, haven't really used it yet. have done some small "widget" type projects in 5, mostly presentations. Macromedia has an example or 2 of apps done it, i think they even did the "petshop" store of MS and Java fame.

Flash is fine, i guess if you're on a supported platform.

Solaris, oh yes, we have a support forum that knocks up dirty equivalents of our products, but they're behind the times ...

Ohh, you meant Solaris for Intel?

I don't believe we do that ... does the binary for Sparc not work?

jad, how the heck are you dude? Havn't seen a post from you in a while... Oh yeah that's cause I have been on TT for the last 20 months :)

I see you still have your sense-o humor LOL
