Is there a way to program a macro (linked to a button on the switchboard) that when clicked, will prompt for a user name and/or password and then open the database in edit mode.

basically, im trying to restrict users from accessing the workings of the database- without having a log-in for the entire database as a whole.

thanks,

Whoa chap.. when you dive into the pool of Access Security, prepared to get drenched ;)

Firstly, yes you could do what you suggested.. however far be it form me to code this for you. Although you've quite simply put what you need in a nutsheel, there are various considerations:

1) 'edit mode' being unliteral: rather either giving a user the ability to use the code that updates the tables, or not.
2) access built in security.. mdw files should be an easier option
3) locking down your db using hte hide database window property and the allowbypasskey property..

Search around matey.. just type in 'access security' in this furom's search area :D
