MacOS 9 fails to start when a Windows server is unavailable

I have the following issue. I am swapping out an old Windows 2000 server from a mixed WindowsXP/MacOS 9/MacOSX network with a 2003 one. I have managed to get everything talking to the new server correctly, but when I shut down the old server, the MacOS 9 Apples hang on startup. If I disable Appletalk on those boxes they boot OK and they also boot fine with the old server left on.

As I am somewhat of a Mac novice, I was wondering if there was something else I needed to remove / change in order to get the OS 9 Apples to work properly.

Thanks in anticipation (and sorry if this is not enough information),

Magz.

This is an extremely difficult question to give a specific answer to but I can try to give you some ideas to check.

It seems to me that OS 9 is looking to the server for something that it needs to start up. The first thing to do is to identify what software you are using that might need something from that server.

For instance, does the Mac get it's IP address through the server? It could be hanging on that, waiting to run certain processes such as email or something else that you would know better than I.

Another thought would be to uninstall software a program at a time to see if one is causing the problem.

Just had another idea. Your 2003 server most likely uses some new connection technology that OS X has no trouble with. At this point I am getting into areas that I do not have knowledge of so...

You said in your post that they hang on boot unless Appletalk is off. Have you tried turning it back on after the computer boots? Just curious if there is any reaction then.
