My company has been running Progression 7.6 for well over a year. We have been told that it is not possible to have inventory in more than one bin if we plan on utilizing the EDI add-on. However if I utilize the on-line help it appears that the system will search based on bin priority.
Is anyone else using the system in this manner. Our company has only 1 whse but, about 1800 bins - it is becoming almost impossible to manage where everything is with out using the multiple bins. I wanted to see if anyone else has had any experience with this.

Thanks in advance for any insight you may be able to provide.

Is inventory set up to use hard or soft allocations?

I don't have anyone using hard allocations nor would I recommend it. If it's set up for soft allocations, I'm not sure why it wouldn't work. Even with EDI, you still have to go through the select for billing process and possibly the confirm ship function if that's how you are relieving inventory. After doing that, you can 'send' the EDI invoices or advanced ship notices.

You can indeed use multiple bins if not hard allocating when importing EDI. The thing most companies with multiple bins find in using the OE functions after importing EDI is that the OE person must select the bins when billing, or shipping must confirm pick the bins, slowing down the overall data processing. Some ways to relieve this are to use RF bar codes & scan picked shipments. Your budget will need to be examined for this choice. Do you have a combination of low level picking bins & "overstock" on upper level shelving in the warehouse? Depending on your whse configuration physically, how much data entry you want to do & how much money you want to spend would suggest the best approach. You should consider a macola consultant (a real world macola consultant) to help assess your options. Money spent up front here will save you pain & anguish in the future.

A lot of people who talk about "bins" are actually better served by using the picking sequence feature of Item Location maintenance.

There is no such thing as multiple picking sequence per item location record, while there is multiple bin. However as earlier posters alluded to, multi-bin does have a degree of overhead associated with it.
