Machine Restarts After Welcome Screen

Running WIndows XP Home *without* SP2 installed on a Pentium IV machine.

Machine boots to "Welcome" screen OK and then when I click on a users name the machine starts to play the tune that goes with the log on process but suddenly the machine will shut down and re start. This normally happens twice in succession and then will be OK for 10 days or so and then it happens again.

Any ideas anybody?

Interesting. Check memory, Hard drive and CPU temperature. Then start reinstalling and replacing parts. Other than that no ideas.

Check the Event Viewer. Start, Run, Eventvwr.msc

I agree with franklin97355 it does sound like hardware, particularly RAM, although a hard disk drive that requires some warming up could also be at fault.

Do an extended test of installed RAM on a cold machine:
