machine hangs at "verify" during backup

I have an HP SureStore tape 5000, using dds2 media, hanging from a scsi chain off a WIN98SE machine. I'm using the microsoft backup utility. The backup seems to go well until verify when it hangs and requires a hard boot. Any ideas?
