Hi all,

Here's my problem. I've got a burned copy of RedHat 6.1 I'm trying to install on my box. I go through the ritual of choosing a language, choosing Install/Upgrade, and telling it it's a "local cdrom" install. When the program goes to mount the cdrom it hangs, the light comes on on the cdrom, goes out and the cdrom drive just spins forever. When I log into the box (which is currently running RH 6.0) I can mount and read the RH 6.1 cdrom just fine. I changed out the CD-rom drive, the exact same problem still exists. Does it seem to be a problem of the burned disk?
Jon Zimmer
b0rg@pcgeek.net
<a href= Aetea Information Technology
The software required `Windows 95 or better', so I installed Linux.
Have you tried booting from the CD itself instead of a floppy? The newer version of red hat can boot right from the cdrom instead of having to boot from the floppy disk. If that doesn't work, you'll probably have to get a different cd. I've seen problems like this before. What OS did you burn the cd in? Linux or Windows or other?
You might need to make the cd with a different compatability format. I myself can make cd's in Juliet and iso9660. I think the only way you can get your cdrom to even burn near how it is supposed to, is to burn it in linux.
Also, what files did you use to burn the cd? Did you download the iso file, or did you download all the files separately? You're safer downloading the iso to burn.
I believe that you download RH6.1 as an image, so there is no choice (?) as to the proper format to burn. Try booting from the cdrom instead like Kiehlster suggested you might be suprized that it actually works, I was pleasently suprized that my old 4x supported cd-rom booting.

BTW I found RH to be finicky when it comes to upgrades. I could not get RH5.2 to work, I got RH6.0 to work no problems and I could not get RH6.1 to work. And this was all on the same machine! I ended up trying mandrake 7.0 and am still with it.
Troy Williams B.Eng.
fenris@hotmail.com

Sorry about the double post, disregard the first message from myself..... <:)
Troy Williams B.Eng.
fenris@hotmail.com

Thanks for the help, I had to use a windows bootdisk to get the machine to use cd-rom support. It's an old machine and the BIOS doesn't let you choose to read the cd-rom on boot. I got everything up and running just fine now. Thanks again.
Jon Zimmer
b0rg@pcgeek.net
<a href= Aetea Information Technology
The software required `Windows 95 or better', so I installed Linux.
You could always see what's failing with the CDrom. One if the virtual terminals will show error messages during the install. Just hit ALT-F1 to F8 until you get to the console window.

I myself have had this happen on many occations and I have had many different problems and solutions. I remember once the problem was with the SCSI device number I gave to the CDrom. Once I had to move the IDE CDrom from Primary Slave to Secondary Master IDE. and if the computer is so old that it still has a propritary SB interface CDrom you really need to buy a new computer. :)

You may want to check out a different distrib like Debian or Slackware. I myself still have an MCC install. To bad MCC went away back around version 1.0 of the kernel.

-cm

Actually, I just bought the computer a Dell Pentium 166 for $50 including monitor, keyboard and mouse. I got it just to put Linux on it and have yet another machine in my farm of machines. It's no big deal to me that it's old, I want to see how far I can go on it until it gives up. For $50.00 it's a great little toy.
Jon Zimmer
b0rg@pcgeek.net
<a href= Aetea Information Technology
The software required `Windows 95 or better', so I installed Linux.
