I am bamboozled,

I have a used system I recently reinstalled XP Pro 32 bit on. It is not part of the Domain because I was just using it as a Hard Drive tester. Recently, I put it into use for a remedial job of displaying an Excel Doc on a big screen for employees to see, that's all it does. I have installed Teamviewer so I can make changes to the PC from my laptop, which works fine. It accesses Windows Updates fine, the internet through IE and FF fine, can ping anything on my network fine, and is seen in the Computer section of my AD servers. I cannot ping/tracert(which are basically the same I know) the machine from any machine on my network.

How is that possible? I tried joining it to the Domain just to make sure it wasnt a GPO/security issue, plugged it into a different switch, and changed it to a static IP all without fixing the issue. I will say again, it works fine with TV, internet, and updates.

I have installed a NIC and it functions the same with it or onboard. Any advice on what to try next, Im all ears.

P.S. The reason I need it to be accessable to my network is I wanted to install a program that holds a license which another program needs to run. Basically this PC would have a USB license dongle that is needed by another PC to function.

Sounds like the ping is disabled in your firewall. Have you checked that?

Look at ICMP settings, and the echo request.

Windows Firewall is active but was never changed in any way from "stock" thats why I find it hard to believe that it would be interfering or that ping echo was turned off. Its a new XP install with few additions and I have done similar with other PCs I used this XP disc on without issues....

When I get time I will check the echo and/or turn off WF and try again.

Stock windows firewall disables 'respond to ICMP' - enable it and all will be well! (I no longer run XP so can't give detilas - sorry.

Yahtzee,
So it does disable it, cant believe I didnt check there in the first place. Now on to figure out the USB dongle issue....

Glad it worked.

Does the usb dongle had any form of hardlock server running to communicate with it?

There is a local server program installed along with the USB dongle and a license manager associated with it. After sleeping on it, and finally getting a chance to think about it again, there was an exception that had to be made through the Windows Firewall and one more small step to allow the dongle to be accessed by the rest of the domain. Going to verify today, but should have it figured out later on today.

Thanks to all for your help once again.

The echo requests settings are for the incoming pings not outgoing.
If they are set to off, the machine won't respond to the incoming ping requests.

But you can happily ping from the machine to any other address you want.

So no, unless you expect to ping the machine in question, you don't need to to turn them on to ping towards the outside.
