Hello,
I just got a MacBook OS X.4. Hooked it up to my network. DSL SpeedStream 5100 modem into a Linksys WRT54G version 5 router with 1.00.9 firmware. Before the MacBook arrived I have three Windows 2000 SP 4 machines connected to the router. Not one problem since I got the router three months ago. As soon as the MacBook is connected to the network after about ten to twenty minutes the router will freeze with no connection to the internet. The router has to be power cycled and it will be good another ten to twenty minutes. I upgraded the router firmware from 1.00.6 to 1.00.9 no success. Did the MAC address clone thing,no success. If the MacBook is not connected the Windows machines run with no problems using DHCP,MacBook using DHCP.Anybody else have this problem. Is there a solution? Or another brand of router that works better with Mac's?
Dmac,

This sounds like possibly an Ethernet hardware issue.

Does the MACBOOK work by itself on the router?
Can you login to the router?
You mentioned using DHCP, is the router assigning an IP?

If no, then you might want to call AppleCare for assistance or take it to the Apple Store to have it checked out.

Linksys routers work very well with Apple computers from my experience.

Hope this helps!

Syquest,
I've never tried the MacBook alone on the router.
When the router locks up I cannot log into the router.I can log in after any time it is rebooted.
Yes the router is assigning IP addresses to all machines hooked up. Starting with .100 thru .102.I took the MacBook to a friends house and connected to their network,he has a Linksys with a different firmware version. That firmware version was not available for the router I have. The MacBook stayed connected for a couple of hours without any problems.Connected with ethernet or AirPort.
Dmac,

Have you tried connecting wirelessly to the router?

Also have you tried using a different patch cord to connect the Mac? They can and do go bad...

Just wondering, when the router is in the 'locked up' state what LEDs are lit and can you PING any of the other machines connected from one another?

Have you checked all the options set in the router?

Could one of the ports on the router be defective?

Syquest,
Yes I have used it wirelessly. That is how I connected to the router with the MacBook right out of the box.Same result.

Also have tried different patch cords. Both work on PC or Mac.

I don't know what else to try on the router. Maybe PPoE and that kind of stuff. I don't have to log into the ISP when I want to connect. It is always on SBC Yahoo DSL (3008 down and 512 up).

I don't think the port is bad because I have a ThinkPad that used that port prior to the MacBook. I had no problems with the ThinkPad.

I'm at the point of getting a new router. Any suggestions of what brand will work better with MacBook.
Dmac,

The PPPOE only applies to a Workstation when you are not connected to a router or switch, but directly to the DSL device, if that is your connection protocol instead of IP.

It could be the Linksys, did you call them for support?

Did you actually try the MAC BOOK on another port?

You could also take both the MAC BOOK and the Linksys to the Apple Store Genius Bar and see what they think about this condition. I would think they could determine whether the MAC BOOK was working properly or not.

Before you go and buy another router, do you know someone that has one you could borrow to test in your setup?

Hopefully you can come to some conclusion for your situation. I know this is frustrating.

Just an update, I got a D-link router to replace the Linksys.
It has worked without any problems for four days now. No problems with the MacBook connected to it.
Dmac,

It's good you found one that works in your network. Just out of curiosity which D-Link router did you get?
