Hi,

We have a MAC Workgroup server that has about 250 GB of data on it. I need a library to back that up. Where should I go to get a solution? Should I buy a large library to backup both my NT/2000 servers and my MAC or keep them separate? What backup software should I purchase?

Thanks

For that level of data, speed is important. Go for AIT - its a helical scan device.

Bear in mind the proposed expansion of your data (you need double the space about every year) so don't buy a 250GB backup unit.

I'd recommend a Lacie AIT 15 tape library. Takes AIT-1 or AIT-2 tapes. You can backup at 360MB/min with AIT-1 or twice that with AIT-2. AIT-1 tapes give you 35/70GB per tape, AIT-2 gives 50/100GB per tape.

I use a Lacie 15 tape autoloader / library and back up 300GB. Do a differential each night and a full on a Friday. This means you minimise tapes needed to restore. You'll then probably only need one tape during the week and about 2 on a Friday.

Software? Always Retrospect for the Mac.

Keep your PC servers separate and back them up using Backup Exec which is the best software for the PC.
