I know this has been asked before, but I can't seem to get it to work. Basically, I've a PC running Win2K, a Mac running 10.4.4, and a crossover cable between them. I'm just looking for a simple way to transfer files between them.

I can ping the Mac from the PC, but not the other way round. I set up an FTP server on the PC, and I can download files from either computer, but I can't upload from the Mac for some reason. When I select Windows Sharing from the System prefs, I'm given an address, but when I try adding a network place on the PC, this address is not accepted.

To be honest, I'd prefer to have just one shared folder on either machine where I can add/rename/move/delete files. FTP doesn't really appeal to me for such a small set up. Does anyone have any idea where I might be going wrong, or a link to a decent (easy!) step-by-step tutorial? Everyone says it's easy with OSX, but I just can't get it to work! Then again, it's probably Windows that's causing the problems :)

I'm not sure of what you're saying. Can the Mac access the PC? If not, I assume that the PC is rejecting it.

If the PC cannot access the mac, make sure that in System prefs/sharing/services you have sharing and windows sharing checked. Under System prefs/sharing/firewall you have windows sharing checked.

As far as I know, Windows needs mac sharing enabled but i have no idea how to set it. You also have to midnful of any security software, such as firewall that you might be running.

A-ha! Zone Alarm was running on the PC and it was set by default to treat the Ethernet adapter the same as any internet request.

What was confusing me was that the Mac had all the correct boxes checked, and it could download files from the PC's FTP server. However, it couldn't access any shared folders, upload to the FTP server, or indeed modify existing files in any way.

Networking is definitely not my strong point. Security software on the PC sounds obvious now that you've mentioned it, but it never even crossed my mind, so thanks for the tip!

Just as an extra... you don't actually need a cross-over cable for this. The mac will recognise any ethernet cable and just work.
