Mac OS X v10.3.5 startup banner

I need to display an IT Banner on startup on our new G5 running Mac OS X v10.3.5. I was able to do this in previous versions by copyig a bitmap file to the system folder.

Mac OS X v10.3.5 will not allow me to copy the bitmap file to the system folder. What do I need to do to accomplish this.

I assume you have root administrative rights? That's the only way you can add to the System folder.

By that, you may have to restart, and logon at the root level, rather than just have access to the root.

How dod you logon as root level?

To logon is root, simply type "root" as your username and the root password in the password field. You can enable the root user in the NetInfo Manager in the Utilities folder.

Thanks for telling me how to enable root. Wasn't aware there was a root account(newbie mac tech), and secondly, I don't recall seeing any account name known as root in my review of the system.

For some reason I cannot enable the root account from NetInfo Manager. I found this post on the web at another forum indicating a possible probelm with MAC OS 10.3.5

Still cannot enble root account.

Finally enabled root account, but cannot login as root from the main login prompt. There is only one logon name. I cannot select or type another username or password at the main login screen.

How do you enable multiple logins on MAC OS 10.3.5?

Startup screen still not working under OS 10.3.5.

The startupscreen.sup file used on the G4(which is working) has been copied over to the new G5 system folder using root access. Rebooted and still will not come up.

Any suggestions?

What kind of start up screen are you talking about? Are you talking about replacing the apple logo that appears during boot up? The white panel that displays start up progress? The background picture that comes up behind the logon screen?

To replace the apple logo you need to write the new picture into the firmware, replacing the apple logo. To modify the white panel that displays progress you need to replace a special PDF file called "bootpanel.pdf".

As far as I know "startupscreen.sup" was a Mac classic thing and isn't supported under OS X.

Finally, someone answered my question. That's one thing I dislike about Apple, their documentation is hoorible!!

If it wasn't for the forums, you'd have no help at all.

In Apple's defense what you want to do is *not* supported, it's a hack - which means be warned, what works for one rev of the OS may not work for the next one.

Apple doesn't support alteration of the look-and-feel of the OS.

In the system preferences select "accounts" in the accounts window click "login options" and select "display login window as: name and password" and deselect "automatically login as" this will give you a login screen that you will enable you to login as root
