I am running a Mac 0s 9 server. When i try to move data to the server, i get the message ".... cannot be written because a disk error occurred" this does not happen every time, but it is frequent. I checked the permissions and they all seem fine. Any ideas??

Ok. First of all to clarify, i am running appleshare ip admin over os 9. I am still recieving this error. I have recieved this error when copying folders to other places on the server(doing this from the server). I have run the disk first aid utility, and norton's disk doctor twice. I am pretty sure it is a problem with the hard disk. Does anyone have any ideas before i have to format the drive?? I am fairly new to macs and i am now responsible for the well being of a all mac office. much appreciated.

If the disk is coming back fine after running the utilities, it could still be a disk problem. Have you tried rebuilding the desktop? (Hold option & command at startup until the finder starts to load, it will ask you if you're sure you want to rebuild the desktop. Click yes.)

I have also run into similar errors trying to copy files from windows boxes that have longer filenames than are allowed on macs. See if shortening the filenames helps.

Best of luck,
PT

I have rebuilt the desktop. Now the filename thing could be it, but there is about 50 gig of files on this server. I am planning on backing it up and running speed disk on the drive. it is running 9.0.x right now, and i am considering upgrading to 9.2. Good idea?? Considering there are so many files, probably many with long file names(what is considered a long filename?) is there a workaround? Shortening every file may prove tedious.

Thanks

Definately a good idea to update to 9.2 Also make sure you have the last update for ASIP, if you're running appleshare IP on that for server software. (Ignore that if you're just using OS9's file sharing.) If your files are already on that drive, they don't need to be shortened. (I was refering to copying files to a mac os9 disk from a PC.. sorry if that was confusing)

Well, i have backed up the drive and formatted it, writing the zeros. I plan to re-install 9.0.3 and the appleshare ip admin. Quick question, do you know if it is difficult to copy the permissions so that i dont have to set them all up again? and also, do you think i will run into a problem if i do this and upgrade the os to 9.2??

I don't think the permissions will have changed. You can get info on your backed up files and check though. So when you copy them back they should be the same as well. I had no problems upgrading to 9.2. Actually, it solved a few for me. I was having wierd problems with windows users creating new folders, but not being able to name them.
