Mac Oracle 6 server (Oracle 6.0.33 on Quadra 950 running OS 7.0.1 with both AppleTalk and TCP/IP listeners) fails shortly after startup with ORA-00314 error -- unable to connect to default host. I don't think this is a redo log problem. Things that changed since yesterday: config.ora, subnet (altho this was changed back), and Network control panel. Someone suggested it was a instance name error -- where does Oracle 6 get instance name at startup and how can I confirm it is correct? How could I determine that SQL*Net is running?

To create a new database you must use some sql-scripts or simply the sql*dba utility. You can check the sql*net functionality with a small program called 'nettest' available on all hardware platforms (even on macintosh :) ).

I'm still interested to get a Oracle6 Server version for the mac for educational purposes. Oracle itself has stopped its macintosh activities. Anyone interested in macintosh connectivity is invited to contact me.
