Hello

I am under a bit of pressure to get this problem sorted out, so your help would be greatly appreciated.

We have a problem printing Quark documents, the printer seems to be set up ok (Epson Stylus Photo 1200) and we can print from Office and outlook etc.

When I attempt to print from Quark (any quark doc) it says that it can not open the printer dialog? - according to the Quark manual this is caused by a lack of memory, we have 256MB RAM in the computer and no other running programs when this problem occurs.

We do lack HDD space and I wonder if this is causing the problem, do MACs use a swap partition or page file, can anyone offer a few pointers as to what to check out, and maybe some typical settings for comparison ?

Thanks for your help

Hi

Giving quark a little bit more memory could be of use (go to the orignal quark map, select the icon for the quark programm, use the info in your file menu, and allocate more memory to the programm).
An other problem could be that you use the option 'print in background', if you use this option, quark will first of allcreate a fileon yourmac and afterwards send it to the printer, this uses diskspace and if you ack diskspace this couldbe a problem.

Hope this solves it.

Thanks for that, i have certainly learned alot about the way MACs use memory - unfortunately this has not solved my problem.

Try giving your printer app more memory, the default usually isn't enough. Also, check and make sure you're running the latest drivers for your printer. I've run into problems in the past with newer versions of Quark and older printer drivers.

Click file--> get info on your desktop printer, give it an extra 500k. And yes, the documents are spooled to your hard drive, which could cause a problem if you are *extremly* low on disk space. You could try turning off background printing in the chooser. I believe this will send the document directly to the printer, but you will be unable to use your mac for anything else during the print job, until all data has been sent to the printer.

best of luck,
PT

As for giving more RAM to Quark........don't give it more than 64332k....Quark won't use it.....

Also try turning off virtual memory if you have it on......

Good Luck!!!

Thanks for your comments,

I am pretty convinced that our problems are caused by a lack of hard drive space - we are now looking to upgrade or even buy a new G4 - but it has been a good experience and as previously stated I have learned a lot about MAC's and tend to quite like them, so roll on that G4 !!!
