Hello..

I'm presently writing this message on a powermac G4 that works absolutely splendidly save for one totally bizarre 'feature'.. it never shuts down.

If I choose 'shut down', it will turn off all computing faculties and like 'turn off' but the power supply keeps humming and even the video card fan keeps spinning. All lights turn off, save for the light on the inside of the case I believe. Is this a common syndrome? is there a way to make this mac shut down? I'd be very grateful for any help.

-Warmest Regards,

Alex

It certainly is not common. First, I'd opne the System Prefs/Energy saver and look at all the settings. You might try chnaging a few. If you have the "allow power button to sleep computer", the computer might sleep when you hit the power button unless you hold the buttom in for a long time.

If you're accidentally sleeping the machined, you have settings for turning off the hard drive and monitor. The hum you hear is the hard drive spinning.

If necessary, you can try doing a new install if the OS via Archive and Install - which retains all your settings from the present os and keeps a copy of your old system so that you can drag stuff from the old to new if necessary. Before doing this go to Mac help and search for Archive & Install. That's for OSX. If using Classic, it's called "clean install".

If you aren't accidentally going into sleep mode, there's another possibility which I discovered by mistake on my G3 ... my iMac refused to shut down but I noticed that was only when my external USB CD burner was connected to the USB port on my keyboard. Once I disconnected the drive, I had no problem shutting it down.

Not sure if this actually applies to your situation, but it's just a tidbit I thought I'd throw out here.

Regards - M
