I have a friend that has a MAC (OS10.2.6) and he has a new copier that can be used as a network printer. From Microsoft platforms, will print fine, but from MAC it prints garbage. We are being told that the copier needs some Post-Script III memory because MAC's only print in Post-script. Is this true or is someone blowing smoke.

Thanks

I smell smoke.

sounds like you may have a copier that does PCL only. The postscript card is extra (like $300 or so). We fell into this trap with a Canon a while back.

Go to the web interface and it should tell you.

I've got a PCL printer attached to my Mac10.2.6 and there seems to be no problem with the printing. Your problem may be due to the way that the printer is installed or configured on your Mac. Look there, not to purchasing excess gear.

Some manufacturers claim OSX compatibility because their printer drivers operate in Classic mode or have limited printer functionality in Native OSX. I used one printer where the Windows drivers allowed 600 dpi printing while the Mac only allowed 300 dpi printing because of the vendor's limited commitment to providing full OSX functionality. Check the manufacturer's site for the most recent OSX drivers.

You may also look to how you are connecting to the printer - - the network printing may be the bug. My printer has 2 connections so I use the parallel connection for my PC network and the USB connection for the Mac.

You are looking at software issues, not necessarily memory/hardware.

In investigating, the copier does do PCL only, but has a memory slot to install post script memory. But I am still unclear if post script is a gotta have for setting this thing up on the network so MAC's can print to it.
Insights?

I print from my Mac laptop to a PCL Windows network shared printer. Look into using CUPS (see the Apple discussion forums) for setting up your printer in OS X
