Mac and parental control

I am new to macs and need some help. I need to setup a few macs in a public area where kids will surf the web. I need a solution that will eliminate unsuited material from viewing. I don’t want to invest into a full blown filter as I only have very few workstations. Perhaps something like steadystate for PCs.

OSX Leopard has great parental controls built in.

Just go to System Preferences and choose the Parental controls panel

From there you can configure the times the machine/account can be used and for how long.
You can also select which applications can be used, which sites can be visited, remove profanity from the dictionary, set Mail and iChat usage.

You can also keep a dedicated log of activity if you wish.

I agree with Foamcow, Parental Controls is probably all you need, but if you need to be a little more granular then that you can download and install the server tools and use the Work Group Manager portion of it.

There are a few free firewall apps as well that are worth mentioning, WaterRoof and NoobProof that can be helpful. They can be found at

Workgroup Manager will give you the ability to disable external drives or limit the ability to burn or load CD/DVD's.
