MAC Addressing

how can you determine the originating host of a VM by its' MAC address?
We recently had an incident at work and unless someone owns up to causing it, we will all lose our installations. I've checked on the web and found how you can manually set MACs, but nothing on how they are auto-created. Any assistance is greatly appreciated.

are you asking how to identify which ESX host a VM originally was created on because it may have moved (vmotion, DRS)? When you create a VM, the MAC address is auto-created in different ways depending on your installation. If you are running virtual center, the MAC address is generated by VC. If you have a stand-alone host, the host auto-creates the MAC. Please provide more details of the environment
