We are looking into purchasing a new BCM 400 rel. 4.0. My question, can we use our exiting M-series phones with the new system?

I heard there are only certain releases on the (m7324/m7208) M- series phones which will work with the BCM release. 4.0.

M7100 Release 01 or higher
M7208 Release 16 or higher
M7310 Release 16 or higher
M7324 Release 05 or higher
M7410 Release 03 or higher
T7100 Release 01 or higher
T7208 Release 01 or higher
T7316 Release 01 or higher
T7316E Release 01 or higher
T7406 Release 01 or higher
Norstar Door Phone No
BST Door Phone Yes
Nortel Digital Mobility Yes

They will all work, however older releases lack the ability to store the Set Volume setting i.e. every time you end a call the set will default back to system volume. I have used very old (manufactured in 1991) phones with systems made in 2006 without troubles besides the volume issue. You can still adjust the volume manually of course.
