Is lun 000 still required for RHEL to scan all SCSI devices on the emc array

AFAIK yes. that's linux limitation, not EMC.

in addition... anyway, if you have Symmetrix, de VCMDB volume is always lun 0, if your system is clariion, you can assign the proper LUN 0 to the storage group.
