Can anyone point me in the right direction. We have a Lucent 5ESS Central Office Switch and we need to be able to block calls coming in from Overseas. Is there a forum for this issue

Are you the LEC or the end user?

If you are the end user what sort of PBX/switch do you have? This will need to be programmed there. Depending on the PBX, there may be a forum here on Tek-tips for it. If not, then this general board is the correct place.

You say you need to block incoming overseas calls? That is an odd one, usually people want to block outgoing calls, if any.

Are the countries you want to block part of the NANP (e.g. North American numbers as used in US, canada, and some parts odf the carribean)?

Good luck.

Whoever is sitting in a position to look at the switch's properties (the telco?) might be able look into call blocking that would allow no more than 11 digits to be put through (which would accommodate any domestic caller: 1+(XXX) XXX-XXXX, but not a foreign one with its additional country code). I'm not a switch engineer, but if ordinary Call Block is possible, surely some form of ">11 digits" call blocking can be worked out. I can't think of any other distinction between calls from here and those from across the pond. Or, as has been suggested, calls might have to be controlled by the PBX, if you've got one, using similar logic. Of course, this assumes foreign telephone numbers are usually long enough that they would be exceed the Block parameters...I don't know. Wouldn't work if someone was calling from "(02) 45-987" in Freedonia or something!

If you do in fact have a 5ess, and have maintenance with Lucent, then you can login into their website and they have all the manuals available for your use after you set up a account. (some end users do have 5EES, I have encountered them occasionally.)
