I need to connect a DELL Powervault LTO1 autoloader up to an HP DL380 G3. I see there is a spare external VHDCI connector on the back that I could connect the backup drive to.

Is this recommended? Is it going to cause any problems?

I do have a dedicated 39160 that I could use in the long-term, but at the moment it is in another machine being used for backups, and I just want to do some testing with the DL380 first.

Well, I connected the autoloader to the onboard SCSI VHDCI external connection and everything seems OK so far, but what are the disadvantages? Will this affect the 2 RAID arrays on the server? Will there be performance issues? Should I install the dedicated 39160 for the long-term?

Thanks.
