I want to put an LTO2 label onto an LTO3 tape. Will that work? I'm doubtful that it will as they have different colors/and perhaps coding.

And what happens if you put a LTO3 label on a LTO2 tape?

Sure it will. The colors are specified by the customer/user and the codes with the exception of the last 2 #'s which is in small letters at top right corner of the tape, like an "L3" for an LTO3 tape. This coding is for you to know the tape by looking as well as some softwares who identify this as being a 1/2" cartridge LTO2 "L2" or and LTO3 media "L3". Some backup softwares let you decide on the media capacity which at that point you can use an LTO2 barcode on an LTO3 tape and vice-versa.
