If I replace <br> with <br /> will it work in all modern and old browsers?

How old is "old"?

NN6 could be classed as "old", and so could IE3 - but they are a world apart.

Well going back to Netscape 4 and IE 5, though I suppose that the percentage of people using these browsers is probably less than 1%.
The reason I asked was that firefox doesn't put a line break in when I use <br>, but does with <br /> so I was thinking of replacing all <br> with <br />

Really? I get proper breaks with either - regardless of my DOCTYPE (or lack of).

Can you post your code that isn't working (or a small test harness), or a URL to it?

If not, you can always use

Code:
<br></br>

Browsers that don't kowtow to the tyranny of the slash will ignore the closing tag.
