I have several old Compaq Deskpro XL 5120's on which I would like to do a re-install. However, they have no CD-ROM and insufficient disk space to copy the files from a shared CD-ROM on the network. When trying to re-install from a shared CD-ROM on the network I get error SU0168 - windows cannot be upgraded.....

Any ideas greatly appreciated.

Try renaming the win.com file on the hard drive to something else and then run the setup. Of course if you're that low on disk space I guess anything is possible.

How about downgrading to an earlier 95. You gain 30 to 40 mb for every step down.
Look at what you are trying to download. W95 subdirectory files only are required, no subs under that.
You might also be able to force the network up between reboots to be able to share the cd.
You might also have to delete some other stuff off to make room.
Your upgrade error may be fixed with the win.com rename, but I've also found that some versions require the desktop to be removed and others that require the registry files to be gone. In general, whenever I do this I blow away the windows directory with deltree. Ed Fair

Hello, stevenh.

Suppose all your connection and share and upgrade package are proper, the SU0168 means setupx.dll loaded in the memory is of a wrong version.

Checkout the mksb article for detailed resolution instructions:

If it is not hardware problem, you should be able to do what you are doing.
