Using SQL2000 on a Win 2000 network environment, I am trying to connect to an Access DB located on a different machine by adding it as a linked server.

The linked server appears to be created but when I try to access the linked server's tables folder (using Enterprise Manager) I get an authentication error.

Ive tryed entering the source name several different ways:

's:\Customer DB\Customers.mdb'

'\\ServerName\nn_share$\Customer DB\Customers.mdb'

or even:
'noexistent path'

but I always get the same result.

By changing the Data source to an local mdb eg: C:\Data\test.mdb all is well.

What am I doing wrong? I checked and rechecked the path, spelling etc.

By changing the Source Name to a local DB everything is fine.

1) SQL Server will not see drives mapped in the Windows environment. You'll have to use the UNC as in your 2nd example.

2) You must make sure that the SQL Startup account has access to the MDB. The SQL Account must be a domain user account. Terry L. Broadbent - DBA
