Guys,

I have a Win2k machine that is giving me fits. I did finally get it spyware/adware/virus clean. If I hook it up to my highspeed at home it works fine, no problem browsing. But if I do dialup (I have tried more than 1 ISP service) it will work on the first page, but then can't resolve DNS.

I tried uninstalling TCP/IP and that didn't fix. So, I did the LSPFix.exe and really screwed up, I removed the stuff without thinking and now I can't resolve anything??? So, how do I get my DNS back in Win2K. I am sure that I have some registry problems, etc...and how do I repair IE?

Thanks all,

Erik

You are going to need to reinstall the dial service protocal.

basically if you have AOL, Netzero, etc on Dial up, You would need to uninstall it and then check the Network services for the dialup adapter (tcp/ip)

I would remove it but not the modem adapter.

After that reinstall the Software. This should clear up the DNS thru the dial adapter.

So in Windows 2000, delete the Dial-Up Connections? I went to Add/Remove Windows Components and didn't see how to do that...but do you mean just manually delete and recreate them?

In the Network Services, there is no dial-up adapter, it's just the NIC card, in Windows 2000. Not like Win98 where it is all under Network.

Any other ideas? Keep them coming...

Thanks!

If there is no dialup adapter, make sure by highlighting and then right clicing on the Network Icon from the desktop. Goto properties.

You should see the Microsoft Client service, Tcp/ip, your network adapter, etc..

If there is no adapter there, your modem drive went bust. Start with that.

In Windows 2000, there is no modem adapter. The modem is under Modems in Control Panel. Yes, I have uninstalled and reinstalled the service, tcp/ip, and the file/printing....unless I am missing something, I don't think this approach will work, haven't actually uninstalled the NIC, but I didn't think that would help since it doesn't have anything to do with the LSP's. But who knows?

My DNS is hosed, I need to figure out a way to get my corrupt Windows 2000 registry back to normal. Since I ran the LSPFix.exe, I am now no longer resolving DNS.

Thanks,

Erik

Thanks for the tip! I will give that a try tonight! If that doesn't work, I will let you guys know. Also, any other ideas, I am game...

Jeff,

Worked like a charm. Thanks again, I knew there was a tool out there (and see the one for XP) but couldn't find one for Windows 2000.

Yeah there are versions named WinSockXPFix but it's the same program and I believe it works on all versions of Windows.

Glad you're up and running.
